The Blurb

The celebrated John Burningham opens the door to a child’s secret adventure in this new picture-book classic.

What if you noticed a door in your bedroom that wasn’t there before? And what if it led to a passage to . . . the zoo? You might want to take just onelittle bear back to your room with you, or maybe just all the smaller animals. But how could you resist the penguins and the tigers and the birds? In this classic child’s fantasy featuring John Burningham’s delightfully expressive artwork, an unlocked door leads to pandemonium — and one little girl’s formidable voice reins in an entire menagerie.

My Two Cents

The talented John Burningham has given us yet another hit.  In The Way to the Zoo, we meet Sylvie, a young adventurer at bedtime.  She thinks she sees a door...later she opens the door and discovers a zoo!  Through sleepovers with the animals and a mishap or two, Sylvie learns about the big responsibility of keeping the zoo door closed!

Burningham's illustrations have the same characteristics of some of his other books, like Mr. Gumpy's Outing.  They are watercolor, but almost smudged around the edges, which gives them a magical quality and causes your imagination to run wild.  This baby elephant is my favorite:
