Rhythm & Rhyme with Debbie Diesen

I have been toying with a rhyming picture book...and remembering all those iambs from high school proved not to be as easy as I'd hoped!  (Sorry Mrs. Earp & Mrs. Lambert!!)

This video by Debbie Diesen , featured on the WriteOnCon blog and forum,  proved to be super helpful.  I am all about mnemonic devices!!

Consequently, writers, if you aren't following WriteOnCon today, you should be!  Lots of great instruction, advice, and tools to help you get better!  Also, you have many opportunities to pitch and to perfect your query!  Go check it out!

  1. Oh wow, this was absolutely fascinating to me. My husband and I are musicians (and he a percussionist), so when we are reading to our daughter, a book with clever, interesting, and NATURAL rhythm is just delightful. I always think about it from a musical perspective, so it's nice to learn the real terms. :)

    1. I thought this was such a simple way to explain it! And I love the way she named them! What are your favorite rhyming books, Monika?

    2. I think my favorite is "Barnyard Dance" by Sandra Boynton. So much fun, and the rhythm is so solid throughout (hubby has been known to body-drum along with it while I read). Also love anything by Margaret Wise Brown... especially The Color Kittens and the rhyming parts of Home for a Bunny.
